Recognized as one of the world's great ensembles, The Takács Quartet plays with a unique blend of drama, warmth and humor, combining four distinct musical personalities to bring fresh insights to the string repertoire.
Formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the group is now based on Boulder at the University of Colorado. They perform ninety concerts a year throughout the world. Their 2010-11 series has featured the New York premiere of a work composed for them by Daniel Kellogg, from the slow movement of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" Quartet.
Takács' award winning recordings include the complete Beethoven Cycle on Decca and in 2005 the Late Beethoven Quartets won Disc of the Year and Chamber Award from BBC Music Magazine, a Gramophone Award and a Japanese Record Academy Award.
We joyfully welcome The Takács Quartet back after they wowed the Tryon Concert Association's 2009-2010 series performing as a trio because of a last-minute health issue with one of their performers.
Gramophone Magazine has noted, "The Takács have the ability to make you believe that there's no other possible way the music should go, and the strength to overturn preconceptions that come only with the greatest performers."
